Legislative Day 2018 – Chair’s Report

As Chair I am happy to announce that CCBA had another extremely successful Legislative Day on March 19, 2018.  We met with approximately 50 legislators or their staff to discuss CCBA, the bills we are participating in, and court funding.  We had approximately 40 CCBA delegates in attendance and hope to increase our presence and diversity again next year. Our day also included “The Politics of Sexual Harassment,” an MCLE program sponsored by the Sacramento County Bar Association. The program was moderated by Andi Liebenbaum and featured former FPPC Chair Ann Ravel and Professor Leslie Gielow Jacobs as speakers.

Once again we were able to attend the State of the Judiciary address by California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.  Her address was gracious in tone with respect to the increases and designations of funding for the Judicial Branch as compared to years past.  In discussing our support of the same with legislators, we emphasized our personal experiences in the court system and the impact on our clients as a result of past funding cuts. We were delighted to co-host the Chief’s State of the Judiciary Reception at the beautiful Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building.

Our Conference this year will be in San Diego at the Marriott Marquis from September 13-16, 2018.  We will be meeting at the same time and hotel as the California Judges Association and California Women Lawyers. The California Lawyers Association will also be meeting at the same time in San Diego, and we are looking forward to collaborating with all three groups on programs. We hope that you will join us there; registration will go live in the next few weeks.
